Certification

Video: The importance of annual recertification.

Certification on the CLASS™ tool is required for those who wish to conduct CLASS observations and trainings. CLASS certification and recertification ensure that observers and trainers have demonstrated reliability with the CLASS tool and are able to use the tool accurately and effectively in the field.

Observer Certification

Become a Certified CLASS Observer

Certified CLASS Observers observe and code classroom interactions using the CLASS measure. This certification ensures that observers view teacher-child interactions through the same CLASS lens and assign CLASS codes accurately across education settings. The first step toward becoming a Certified CLASS Observer is registering for and completing a CLASS Observation Training. Those who pass the CLASS reliability test are certified to use the CLASS tool to observe and code classrooms. They receive a Teachstone Certified CLASS Observer Certificate that is valid for one year. Certified CLASS Observers must recertify annually to maintain their certification status.

How to Become a Certified CLASS Observer

  1. Complete a two-day CLASS Observation Training
    • Teachstone offers training at the Toddler, Pre-K, K-3, Upper Elementary, and Secondary age levels. Training is available through On-site and Regional registration.
  2. After completing training, participants must complete the online reliability test within eight weeks.
    • To prepare for the test, Teachstone recommends spending time reviewing the manual and video library, as well as practicing with the training videos. You may also contact your trainer should you need further guidance
    • Participants have three opportunities to pass the CLASS reliability test
    • Upon successfully completing your reliability test, please be sure to print your CLASS Observer certificate. Your certificate is valid for one year from the date you pass your reliability test
  3. Recertify annually. Recertifying ensures that you are observing and coding classrooms accurately. Observers can begin the recertification process up to eight weeks prior to the expiration of their observer certification.
